Serial Numbers

First of all, this is a GREAT message board...thanks, Derek, for all the good work!

I'm looking at a model 2551.80 (Seamaster Bond auto) and a 2561.80 (Seamaster Bond quartz).

I purchase many, many bigger-ticket items over the Internet and I'm attracted to some of the pricing offered by some of the gray market dealers. I do not now own an Omega.

I am looking for a better understanding about why so many people say that it's essential to get a watch with the serial number intact. Any help on this one?

Also, for any of the lawyers out there, how can Omega force resale price maintenance on their dealers in light of antitrust law prohibitions on vertical price fixing? My guess is that authorized dealers are merely "sales agents" for Omega and not true distributors. Is that correct?
