Quartz for lifetime...???

I've occasionally read posts arguing quartz vs auto', in which posters claimed that the advantage of auto' watches over quartz is mainly by their ability of lasting for lifetime.
I'm wondering why can't quartz watches lasting for lifetime, after all their mechanical systems are much less complicated than those in the auto's and the electronic systems have never been something to worry about anyway. In addition, there is also a broad consensus that quartz watches are more shock resistant than autos... so what is the catch here? Why can't quartz watches last for lifetime?

I don't intend to open a new "auto vs quartz" thread here but only curious about this specific point.
