Whoever did it clearly wanted the markings to stay!! Could they have engraved it any more deeply without going through the caseback?! Actually, maybe engraved isn't the word I'm looking for, maybe it's gouged... :) That might point more to it being issued than being a commemorative watch - the intent seems more about lasting markings than an aesthetically pleasing reminder of some event.
