Yes, I agree with that approach - in so far as anything is fixed in such an assemblage of parts, it would be the dial. And the dial is quite often the 'focus' of a watch too. In fact, I think there is pleasure to be found in just looking at the spare dials. Some hands are very nice too of course, like the polished gold ones on the earliest 1158s, plus telling the time on an analogue watch sans hands is pretty difficult! Probably a cue for someone to post a pic of a 'mystery' movement watch there, but I'd argue they are not as easy to read as traditional hands.
