Actually most if not all Rolex owners I have met

know very well of Patek, but generally either don't know or don't care about brands such as Breitling or Omega.

I also think that Rolex in the 80s was s symbol of arriving, but that has been supplanted by people now wanting a nice house or a better car....a good watch seems to be the "last" priority people have.

I always love it when people bring up the Odtes review...especially since the movment reviewed is no longer in production.

Are Rolex as innovative as Omega? definately not....have they ever been though? I really think throughout history the only time Rolex was truly "innovative" was with their case design, and their auto movment...but they are not considered great because of their technical aptitude, rather because they build a timeless watch, with looks that stand the test of time, and manange to retain their value very well....something very very few watch companies have managed to emulate.

I think to answer your question "Does Rolex really make a better watch than Omega" I would have to say it depends on what you are looking for in a watch....peronally I think both companies have their shortcommings and their high points....I really think you are getting at "are the materials/finishing of a Rolex enough to justify the price difference from an Omega" to which I would answer no....on marerial values alone and workmanship then there is not enough of a difference in product to justify the vast disparity in price, but IMHO the service that they offer and the conservatism of their design definately helps to justify it in my mind.

But I do agree with "buy what you like"
