In Response To: Hmm interesting...... ()

: So let me get this straight.....

: You don't respect your Jr. Sales associate for
: working hard, saving money and buying a nice
: watch.....because it is a Rolex

: But...

: You would respect the Hot Dog seller for
: working hard, saving money, and buying a
: nice watch...because it is an Omega....

I think that is what he's saying. Now I have heard of convoluted logic, but this takes the biscuit.

: Perosnally I saw this guy with the SMP and
: figured he wanted a decent watch and got a
: great discount on it at the local wholesale
: club as they sell a good deal of Omegas for
: Rock bottom prices, not that he was a
: corporate exec or anything else as he was
: rather young.

Thats what I would have figured too. But the point is again "buy what you want" makes no difference if it came out of a discount club which if it is an Omega thats probably where I would buy one. I would look for and get a 35% discount at least.

: Also with regards to SMP/Omega fakes...come to
: the US, specifically Washington DC and NY
: and you will see many Omega SMP fakes out
: there, most are not that great, but there
: are some which are OK....so judging your
: purcahse on the amount of fakes and their
: quality is just plain silly IMHO as long as
: your watch is real...personally whenever I
: see an Omega the first thing I think is that
: they cheaped out and went for the quartz
: model as it seems to be a common trend.

Ya. Again I have seen this logic. Let me see if I have it: A Rolex purchase is not for me because it is likely to be "percieved by others" to be fake.

Lets think about the above reason for a few seconds before going to the next "logic"

It goeslike this: most people buy Rolex watches so that they can be "perceived to be wealthier" than they really are.

In the first example the "public perception" that the watch on my wrist is a "cheap fake" is a bad thing, a detriment to my self esteem and my rep. I would never want people to think or even dream I was wearing a fake watch. Thats negative publicity. I want "positive publicity" Look, its an Omega. Omegas can't be faked, Therefore that guy must be wearing a REAL Omega. Real Omegas are some of the finest watches in the world. That guy must have money to afford such a watch. As opposed to the guy standing next to him with the "fake" Rolex(even if we on the outside looking in know its not fake)

In the next example having people believe, or influencing them to believe you have more material wealth than you really have is a bad thing. So a Rolex is the watch of those who would take that route.

But see there is the dilemma. "If I wear an Omega, people will believe its real and have a high opinion of me" If I wear a Rolex, people will believe either its fake or that I am a showoff. Either way with the Rolex.... I believe I will get "negative" press. Either way I need a character transplant.

So now who is really showing off? Who is trying to maintain appearances?
