: So let me get this straight.....
: You don't respect your Jr. Sales associate for
: working hard, saving money and buying a nice
: watch.....because it is a Rolex
: But...
: You would respect the Hot Dog seller for
: working hard, saving money, and buying a
: nice watch...because it is an Omega....
: Sounds like a nice double standard to me
Huh? I thought we were only talking about hot dog sellers and not Jr assoc.s... To analyse the choice of a Jr. Assoc.s wristwatch requires a totally different approach. :-)
Now, I didn't mention Jr assoc.s because the point I was trying to make was:
If the average person (and the reason I say average - bcos there's someone named Lex Luthor on this board who's breathing down my neck for not being able to tell the difference between a real and fake Rolex from 10 paces!) saw a hot dog seller with a Rolex, he/she will most likely conclude the Rolex is a fake as opposed to if the hot dog seller wore an SMP... and as you rightly point out, SMP is so much more affordable - especially the Quartz version.
I think the triads and mafia wouldn't make as much money and our governments would perhaps more income for welfare programs - if people bought the real things instead of fakes. Intellectual property theft is theft...the world would be a better place if people respected this.
: Perosnally I saw this guy with the SMP and
: figured he wanted a decent watch and got a
: great discount on it at the local wholesale
: club as they sell a good deal of Omegas for
: Rock bottom prices, not that he was a
: corporate exec or anything else as he was
: rather young.
: Also with regards to SMP/Omega fakes...come to
: the US, specifically Washington DC and NY
: and you will see many Omega SMP fakes out
: there, most are not that great, but there
: are some which are OK....so judging your
: purcahse on the amount of fakes and their
: quality is just plain silly IMHO as long as
: your watch is real...personally whenever I
: see an Omega the first thing I think is that
: they cheaped out and went for the quartz
: model as it seems to be a common trend.
I certainly don't choose my watches based on the number of fakes on the market. I choose based on whether I like the design 1st and foremost (I have an SMP Auto, X-33 and Casio Triple Sensor Pathfinder just in case you were wondering; my father want to give me his Sub but I told him to sell it off instead because eventhough his was authentic, I just didn't like the design) but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I'd prefer to wear a watch people didn't second guess whether it was real or fake.
: That is great that your father found happiness
: in a $150 casio....personally I would never
: spend more than $90 on a Casio but that is
: just me...I wish I could truly enjoy a cheap
: watch, but for some reason the one that I
: have just doesn't interest me....but I am
: sure you are correct, he never complained
: because he liked the feeling and the look of
: ths sub when he was out and about, I am sure
: now he doesn't do as much and could care
: less about how he looks as many do when they
: get older...I know when I am of a good age I
: will not care what anyone else thinks...but
: I doubt I will sell my watches, only time
: will tell.
Keep them, your grandchildren will appreciate them immensely when you pass it on to them.
