Re: Seamaster Pro Chronometer vs. Quartz

First, automatics can EASILY take the stress of normal wear. Unless you are a construction worker, stunt man, or something unusual, you won't have to worry about the durability of an automatic. The situations you were reading about are mor eat the extremes. A quartz can take more shock--but that does not mean that an automatic is not more than adequate for regular use.

I have worn a 2531.80 as my everyday watch for over three years. And that included a time in my life where my house was hit by a tornado and I did a lot of manual labor helping with the cleanup, moving and remodeling. Only took the watch off for extreme tasks, like hammering. Never a problem.

A SMP has a 44 hour power reserve. So if you make sure it is completely wound when you take it of, it is good for just under two days of being off your wrist. So if you wear it only occasionally, then it WILL run down. But I wouldn't be too worried about stressing it out by manual winding. Frankly, the biggest risk of damage is merely from guys that incorrectly think they have to crank the crown down real tight when they close it. You only need it to screw lightly finger snug. Frequent overtightening can cause more damage than anyting else.

So you should wear your SMP as a daily watch without worries. That's what they are made for! Swap out to one of you other watches for a single day maybe twice a week and your SMP should keep running fine. Just remember, it takes a minimum of 10-12 hours of wear per day to keep an automatic wound enough to keep running.
